As the season shifts into longer days, lengthening shoots, and broadening green leaves, we welcome spring. In this time of growth and expansion — a new beginning! — one of the ways in which I love to connect with what’s currently blooming is through consulting the wisdom and insights of the seasonal flowers I’m seeing around me inside Tarot of Flowers.
There are countless ways to invite the wisdom and guidance we are seeking through oracle decks like Tarot of Flowers, and most often we do so by setting up a peaceful space, getting grounded and clear, asking the cards for guidance, and allowing ourselves to energetically select the card or cards that are calling to us. Another way to receive guidance that is unique to Tarot of Flowers is by intentionally pulling flower cards and consulting their meanings based on flowers you keep seeing on your walks lately, or the flowers you just cut from your garden or picked up from a local grower.
For this reading, I did just that. I teach all my mentees and student designers to keep a monthly ritual practice of creative play with flowers, as it is essential to cultivating and nourishing our creativity. This is a session of time you set aside for yourself to create with flowers just for you, just for fun, and just to explore creatively without pressure or expectation. I will typically buy a grower’s choice bucket from my local flower farmer friend for a creative play session like this so that I get to design with blooms that are in season at this very moment, grown in the same region where I myself am living and breathing.
After a recent creative session, I selected three of the seasonal spring flowers that I worked with as the messengers of this moment to read for their meanings inside Tarot of Flowers.
Here are a few snippets from the booklet providing insights:
TULIP | FOUR OF CUPS
A messenger of stability from the suit of emotions, feelings, and relationships
“Tulip embodies a promise, reminding you to keep the ones you make. As a spring flower, tied to the receding edge of winter, Tulip is at once an omen of new opportunity and a chance for a breakthrough into a warmer time emotionally.”
BUTTERFLY RANUNCULUS | KNIGHT OF WANDS
A messenger of adventurous, seeking energy from the suit of creativity and dreams
“Butterfly Ranunculus reminds you to be bold and move gracefully. The change you desire is in your hands to plan out and begin.”
RANUNCULUS | KNIGHT OF PENTACLES
Another messenger of adventurous, seeking energy from the suit of tangible resources
“Everyone wants to be around Ranunculus, and with that alluring energy and fascination comes a responsibility to withstand the projections and desires of others. [...] This is a message of self-awareness (get to know your true goal) and endurance (keep working toward it until you succeed)."
Interpreting these messages is personal, so you will hear within them what you need, while I will hear what I need, which is essentially because the guidance we seek is already inside. Tarot simply provides the mirror into which we are better able to see ourselves and the deep wisdom we carry inside.
That being said, overall these three flowers taken together can be read for their universal messages, which even at a glance bring us reminders to keep our promises, to follow through with what we set out to do for others or for ourselves, and to get clear about what really matters so that our efforts are both fruitful and fulfilling. That is powerful to consider, especially in this potent energy of possibility that springtime brings.
It’s a beautiful time of year to clean out closets, release old habits or beliefs that no longer serve you, and make room for aligned, creative, and meaningful practices that empower you to live into a harmonious and meaningful life. Be well, and enjoy this time of new growth with intention and gentleness!
